Dental bridges are designed to “bridge” gaps in the teeth and can improve your smile by replacing missing teeth. A bridge holds a false tooth (or teeth) between two natural abutment teeth. The false teeth are usually made of porcelain and will blend in with your natural teeth, although they are available in different materials, even gold.
There are four types of dental bridges to choose from:
-
Traditional bridge: A traditional bridge is the most popular type. This bridge holds the false tooth and is bonded to crowns that have been cemented onto the adjacent abutment teeth.
-
Maryland bridge: A Maryland bridge is a more conservative approach for a bridge. Instead of using cemented crowns, either a porcelain or metal frame is bonded directly to the back of the abutment teeth.
-
Cantilever bridge: A Cantilever bridge only uses a single cemented crown, instead of two, necessitating only one natural tooth next to the gap.
-
Implant-supported bridge: An implant-supported bridge is considered the strongest and most stable. This type of bridge is suspended between two implants with crowns. This process takes longer to complete.
